Hey First things first. The City did not come up with the idea to bring a homeless shelter to reality. A group of caring citizens trying to make a difference spent many volunteered hours coming up with plans and ideas. They brought the idea before the City and the city basicly said we like the idea just not where they wanted to put it.

I believe the town of Marshall needs to get itself grounded before they try to take care of homeless people. Some not all homeless people also have other issues, such as drug use, mental illness (sometimes servere) sex offenders just to name a few other issues. I don't think we need to set up shop for homeless people at least not in a residental area where there are young children and other families. I don't mean that we put them on a 60 acre wooded area either. Marshall has businesses closing, can't draw business into Marshall and now they come up with a half baked idea for a homeless shelter?????? What is up with that?

The City council decision was right. The Homeless issue is a City of Marshall issue and should not burden any one neighborhood. Despite how well the facility might be run, the perception is the neighborhood will be less safe. Renters will look elsewhere for housing. The landlords on that street will lose. I suggest the churches be called upon to assist in solving this issue.

I think that Marshall should have a homeless shelter. However, to put it in the middle of a residential neighborhood is a ridiculous idea. My heart goes out to anyone who doesn’t have a place to live. However, statistics show that a large proportion of homeless are more than just people down on their luck. Drug abusers, alcoholics and the mentally ill are over represented in this population. And, to bring this to a residential neighbor hood is unfair to the property owners as well as just plain dangerous. A better place would be the municipal building or maybe the city could buy and renovate the Marshall Hotel. That place is an eye sore and should be condemned if nothing is going to be done with it anyhow.

The Marshall City Council denied the request for The Refuge to locate a homeless shelter at 1007 Dano Circle. The vote was 4-2 against the Condition Use Permit for "The Refuge". What are your thoughts on this? Did the City Council do the right thing in your mind?
